Born in 1966, Matthew Evans began his career as a chef and gained recognition as a prominent restaurant critic. However, he made a significant life change by embracing a rural lifestyle as a smallholder in the serene Huon Valley of Tasmania.

Matthew is well-known for hosting the acclaimed series Gourmet Farmer on SBS, now in its sixth season, along with its spin-off, Gourmet Farmer Afloat, which showcases his adventures aboard a 40-foot yacht as it sails around Tasmania. He also served as the presenter for two impactful documentaries: What’s the Catch, which uncovers the realities of Australia’s seafood industry, and For the Love of Meat, which delves into the complexities of the nation’s meat production.

In addition to his television work, Matthew has authored over a dozen influential books on food, including the highly regarded Real Food Companion. In 2019, he published his ethical meat manifesto, On Eating Meat, and a new cookbook titled The Commons, which captures the authentic pleasures of seasonal farm life. When he's not busy with farming, cooking, or writing, Matthew enjoys teaching his son the art of fishing, sharing with him the skills and joys of rural living.
